Final Artist statement
Sense of Place
Danielle Kelly
Danielle Kelly
Rather than focusing on a physical sense of place, this work deals with the ephemeral notion of place within a family. Un-monumental events such as family dinners become more significant once isolated from other daily activities. Familiar scenes from movies of families eating dinner enables most viewers to identify with the event and feel a connection to scenarios portrayed.
By juxtaposing ‘family-dinner’ scenes in a grid and playing them simultaneously, the viewer would only be able to pay attention to certain aspects of the videos rather than absorbing all the scenes at the same time. The inability to comprehend all scenes at once, results in the viewer recognising phrases and actions, which trigger personal memories and feelings. Similar to the Rorschach inkblot test, individuals would have different reactions as they watch the scenes and identify with what is personally relevant.
Similar to Félix González-Torres’s use of personal particularities within his work by focusing on his illness, I decided to focus on a subject that was significant to myself. Being a ‘love child’ without acceptance of my fathers existing family; issues of family permeated my day-to-day life making me aware that even within ‘traditional’ family units there can be many psychological and cultural issues.

Artist statement. - not finished
The initial concept for this assignment initiated by ***** my place . Rather than focusing on a physical place i chose to look at a person's place within their family. The reason for choosing place within a family was inspired by *** happening with my own family at the time accompanied with my inspiration of artists such as Félix González-Torres (1) and Pamela Croft(2) using personal subjects in their artwork. Though this was initially intended as a personal look into place, this was by no means inteneded to be any type of therapy nor has it turned out to be directly referencing my family.
While analysing movie scenes of families having dinner, interesting similarities appeared in all of the scenes. Though the movies varied in their sound level or way the families interacted, there was always some type of awkwardness senced amongst the family members.
Similar to the Rorschach inkblot test, viewers of this video will pick up on phrases and words according to what is relevant to them personally.
By Juxtaposing the images of different families in a grid, it highlights both the differences and similarities of families. The range of different issues apparent in these videos highlights the multifaced nature of .......

notes on family
Family denotes a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence.
Social conservatives often express concern over a purported decay of the family and see this as a sign of the crumbling of contemporary society.
genetic distance of chimpanzees and human beings is only ~5%
Family values is a political and social concept used in various cultures to describe values that are believed to be traditional in that culture and in support of the idea that nuclear families are the basic units of culture.

Movie Files
Sourcing segments of video files is prooving more difficult than i thought.
The files i already have as avi need to be loaded into the video editing program, that takes between 30 min- an hour... finding the dinner scene and cutting the rest of the movie out takes another decent ammount of time.
For the DVD videos i already have, i've needed to find a way to firstly save them as .avi type of files.
i found this tutorial that helps... and i've downloaded the programs it's recomended... http://www.wikihow.com/Rip-a-DVD-to-an-AVI-or-MPG-File-Using-DVDx

artists dealing with family/ place.
The family may turn your world upside down or be a safe haven of unconditional acceptance , but it is always an almost palpable receptacle for memory and self.

Dysfunctional Family
Yinka Shonibare
1999
Shonibare uses exploration of status, alienation, and multiculturalism. He uses the creatures to play on the notion of the foreign--or "alien"--in today's social fabric.

Billingham takes candid photos of his family in the uk.
Housebound, alcoholic father Ray who drinks his own homebrew, tattooed, oversized mother Elizabeth, brother Jason and their assorted pets - as they live out their life in their small council flat in the Midlands of Britain.

using old family photos of both his family or that of his partner, this depicts the artist's vacillation between shame and pride.

video instillation ideas.
An essay VIDEO + TIME + SPACE = VIDEO INSTALLATION
Video exists, then, not only in time but also in space:

I found this v on ebay, might buy it cheap to play the video on.
if i am intending to install the video this way, i would like to get a tv cabinet.

the instilation if made like this would give the viewer a sense of it being like home...
of more in the place...
Video exists, then, not only in time but also in space:
"Video is commonly regarded as a temporal medium. The technological nature of video, however, gives it relevance not only in time but in space. Due to the nature(s) of its representation, video exists spatially as well as temporally"

New Assignment
Place and particularities.
The second project focuses on the artist's sense of place- My sense of place.
A sense of place could be described as either physical place as in location or a feeling/ perception held by somebody.
For example, my place at work is an assistant, therefore giving me special ways to act. Another sense of place could be within a family, yet giving a person another way to act.
A sense of place, as far as the feelings go could be related to a e person's feelings of attachment and belonging..
This article in the age "A sense of place" discusses the notion of a sense of place...
"But connection to place is vital to our sense of identity - both personal and communal." the article discusses memorial spaces, and how they matter, and that the location of them is improtant.
one paragraph =
"Go to the suburb where you grew up (it's probably not very far from where you live now, stamping grounds being what they are) and walk the footpaths, the shops where you strolled and loitered as a teenager; the park where you learned to kick a football, fly a kite or trained your dog to fetch; the backyard where you took your first catch or learned to skip, climb, hide or whistle. Not significant? Go and have a look."
stomping grounds would give an important sense of place.
other places the article mention is cathedrals, churches, chapels, courts and concert halls. all places that would ignite a sense of place, even if one doesnt feel like they belong to the place.
it would be a place where anyone would recognise and 'be in touch with'.

Video art.
Watching the ABC- this video cam on...
Unfed-
it was quite interesting, and could relate to the next assignment... (individualism)..
the video is "Inside the cramped bedrooms of a shared household, four dancers experience the painful eagerness of unfed hope."
Opens up the ideas of creating video using performance..
The tuning on my tv is crap so the video was shown in black and white-
i think it looks better in black and white, and could be a good thing to keep in mind when i make my vid.

second try.
Another video... this time tracking the two cleaners... it's interesting because they appear to be friends, and the shape made resembles a heart.
the video has been made to fade out so the 'drawing' becomes more obvious.

Tracking marks
The video is taking a late change-
instead of tracking all people, it might be more effective tracking just one... or a couple.
i have also been looking into the tracks and lines used to track the motion of people and things...
for example... the aboriginal travelling sign used to indicate travel.. (robert barton)
or different lines in orienteering or mapping that mean different things.

Purple (or red) is used to mark the orienteering course on a map. Conditions that are specific to an event (such as out-of-bounds fields in which crops are growing) are also designated in red or purple.
this would then tie in the colours and marks made by the people on the video... or could also change the meaning or conception of the work.

original backup plan
this was one of my original back up plans for the sculpture drawing assignment...
'in process'
i was also planning to create some type of sponges that would fit onto the feet somehow... then soak it into ink so it stamps wherever it goes...
this would have been much more effective on a larger scale.
http://vimeo.com/1609077 here's another cool video of a machine that tries to draw circles...

there are still a couple of glitches to combat...
like when the circles appear, it would be good if they were smoother..

after effects- trial and error
i managed to get the effect i wanted with the red line, where when the person stood still the paint would get thicker in that one spot... however for some reson the grey coloured line with the same settings is not growing.. or when it does, it makes the entire length of it thick.
Somehow, by deleting the keyframe of the last position, the blob seems to get bigger..

write on effect
figured out how to make lines in after effects...
there is a draw on feature (see black line below)
i have managed to get the brush size to increase, but it jumps to the larger size, i need to find a way to make it increase slowly.

Backup IDEA
Journey Tracker
Creating a tool that tracks the movement of a journey.
can be a large one in a car or smaller 'machine' that attaches to the body somehow, or travels on wheels behind.
For example, create some rolling type of device that sits in a container on a body...
the paper in the container records the movement of the person.
Or using a cart...
Problems
Some problems so far is :
Technological issues / the camera not wanting to load the video i think the firewire cable broke.
The video that was uploaded was the wrong format.
The video i took there was a bit of camera shake... makes it difficult to create the pictures.

Concept plan.
The assignment was to create a drawing machine.
Because i wanted to learn how to utilize video within sculpture, and because of my interest in sociology, i have decided to create a video work where recording the movement patterns of people in communal spaces would subsequently create the drawing.
In the journal there is a sketch of my proposal, where the people are givcne a colour depending on the colour of their clothing and that colour will follow them like a line, if the person walks faster the line will be thin, if they walk slower then fat and if they stop for a while the line starts to grow in a circle shape.

Learning video blog.
This is where i will be inputting my information and research towards the video works i intend to work on over the semester.
i believe it will be easier to input video and images into here then print at the end of the semester rather than collecting random images off the net and pasting the ones i havn't lost into my journal.
I will still be using the journal for recording other information and sketches.
